Aspen Colorado Design-Build Project by New York Interior Designers Runa Chi Novak

Runa Chi Novak, principle of acclaimed New York Interior Designers, RCN Interior Design, is used to working on some amazing interior design projects, but the stunning Rocky Mountain location of a challenging design-build project in Aspen, Colorado proved to be highly inspirational. The project, a $3 million renovation of a ski-in/ski-out property on the slopes of a ski resort, was extensive. The house, a 1980s ski lodge, had had little improvement for several decades and was well overdue a bit of an upgrade. RCN Interior Design was asked to completely remodel the interior and exterior. The end result was an amazing combination of contemporary modern style and natural beauty, which is exactly the type of look that Runa Chi Novak is famous for.

Bringing the Outdoors In

One of the bonuses of this interior design project was the beautiful setting. Runa felt that it was important to incorporate elements from the natural landscape into her final design. The stunning backdrop of the mountain location was used as a design inspiration throughout the property, inside and outdoors, and after much consultation with the client a Mountain Modern design theme was chosen that incorporated clean lines and natural texture using wood and stone.

The existing configuration of a great room, dining room, kitchen, family room, master bedroom, reception room, four bedrooms, kid’s secret hiding room and a swimming pool was re-designed and a new patio and courtyard area were added. The existing windows were replaced with floor length sliding doors so that the clients could enjoy the fabulous views, which Runa considered to be the house’s best asset. Other key elements of the design included:

  • A gigantic fireplace that could be appreciated from all sides was constructed between the family room and the great room
  • The kitchen was completely redesigned with brand new appliances and designer cabinets
  • The master bathroom was reconfigured to make room for a walk-in closet
  • The kids were given their own space in the form of a ‘secret room’
  • A second floating deck was built outside the master bedroom
